The Montlake Drakens Africa ex S.A. UCITS Fund is managed by a Johannesburg-based team with wide experience investing in African, Frontier and Emerging Markets.

Drakens Capital employs a long only equity strategy with a heavy focus on sustainability that is the result of two decades of investing in emerging markets. The investment philosophy at Drakens Capital is distilled into a four factor investment valuation model that encompasses Socially Responsible Investing, Risk, Quality and Value. These factors have been shown to result in outperformance over the longer term. This combination leads Drakens Capital to pick companies that are the best in their field and allows Drakens Capital to take into consideration all the influences on their investments from global affairs to local macro and political developments to intra-industry competition.

The Fund invests in equities which derive the majority of earnings from the African continent, with the exception of those listed in South Africa. The tremendous growth opportunities found on the continent provide a rapidly expanding pool of investment opportunities. Growth and volatility often go hand in hand hence the Fund’s measured and systematic investment approach seeks to tap into the emergence of the African continent whilst mitigating the risks associated with the Africa Rising story.

Drakens Africa ex S.A. UCITS Fund - Long Only Equity Fund

Emerging and African market investment professionals – A team born in Africa with over fifty years of combined experience in these markets and a diverse educational background.

Sustainability – The focus on socially responsible investing, quality, risk and value as the drivers of the investment process imbues the fund with an inbuilt positive risk/reward skew.  This provides protection against the quirks of investing in African markets.

Fundamental Approach – The investment process is driven by bottom up, fundamental stock picking with cognisance of the volatility and risk that macro events can induce.  The focus on quality companies provides a natural hedge against these top down risks.
